The Newspaper is a photobook made from the very medium it explores. Combining photography, reportage and experimental book design, it reveals the human labour behind the daily news and asks what the physical limits of print can tell us about the future of information.
Created in collaboration with the Kyoto Shimbun, a regional Japanese newspaper with more than 140 years of history, the project brings together photographs by Kazuma Obara and texts by Akihico Mori. Here, reporters still travel to remote mountain villages and newspaper carriers make their daily rounds. The photographs and texts trace the people, places and routines that give the news a physical presence, offering an intimate portrait of Japan’s newspaper culture.
The publication consists of thirteen separate newspapers, printed on a rotary press and held together with removable brass fasteners. Together, they form a single photobook; taken apart, each can be read as an independent newspaper. A medium made to be read and discarded becomes something to collect and preserve, while retaining the possibility of being taken apart and circulated again.
As digital networks expand the speed and scale of news distribution, The Newspaper returns to a system whose reach is measured in time, distance and human effort. For a newspaper printed late at night, the horizon is set by where a copy can arrive the following morning. Within that finite geography, local lives and small, easily overlooked stories find a place in the public record.
The work explores what these limits make possible, as well as what they constrain. Moving between newspaper and photobook, circulation and archive, it asks what it means to take responsibility for information on a human scale: to gather it, give it form, carry it to others and preserve it.
『The Newspaper』は、新聞そのものをメディウムとして制作した写真集である。プロジェクトの舞台は、140年以上の歴史を持つ、日本で最も古い地方紙の一つである京都新聞である。いまもなお、記者たちは山間部の集落まで取材に向かい、新聞配達員が毎日ニュースを届けている。写真家、小原一真と文筆家、森旭彦は、この新聞産業が残してきた最後の風景の一つを写真とテキストによって記録した。
この写真集は、情報と人間における限界について考察する試みでもある。テクノロジーは指数関数的にその可能性を拡張していくが、人間の身体はそうではない。無限の複製を可能にするテクノロジーと、膨大な電力とネットワークによって成立している今日のニュース経済は、本当に人間をより良くするのだろうか？
一方のフィジカルな新聞は、主として人間の労働が、可能性そのものだった。20世紀の大半においてニュースとは、人間が記録し、人間が届けるものだったのだ。深夜に印刷され、人の手で運ばれた新聞は、朝刊として届けることのできる範囲の中でのみ流通していた。その物理的な制約こそが、小さな地域の記憶を記録し、保存し続けることを可能にしていたのである。
この写真集は、新聞というフィジカルなメディアが持つ情報構造とその物理的制約を、人間が責任を持って扱いうる情報の限界点として捉え直し、その意味を現代において批評的に問い直す試みなのだ。
本作は実際の新聞印刷で使われる輪転機によって印刷された13部の独立した新聞によって構成されている。それらは着脱可能な留め具によってファイリングされており、13部それぞれを取り外し、独立した新聞として読むこともできる。この構造は、新聞であり写真集であるという二面性を持つとともに、新聞そのもののアーカイブと流通の二つの状態を往復することができる。
