The newspaper, once a medium that delivered everyday information, is now becoming an extraordinary medium.

The Newspaper, a photobook created by photographer Kazuma Obara and writer Akihico Mori, critically addresses the disappearance of newspapers from local communities by using the newspaper, once an everyday medium, as a medium for extraordinary artistic expression.

Closely following the Kyoto Shimbun, a regional newspaper based in Kyoto, the book documents the entire process of newspaper production, from journalistic reporting to delivery.

These stories are contained within the photobook as photographs and as a booklet of written texts.

They include News “Cannon”, which captures the reality of the rotary press, a printing machine that has produced the news through a process resembling the firing of a cannon; Tracing the Contours of “Evil”, an interview with a reporter who covered the bereaved families of the Kyoto Animation arson attack; Another Gion Festival, a quiet account of the festival held amid the silence of the Covid-19 pandemic; and Newspaper Lovestory, the story of a newspaper delivery worker who saved money for his wedding through his delivery work.

Across the world, local newspapers are shrinking or disappearing, giving rise to what researchers call “news deserts”: communities where reliable local information no longer circulates sufficiently. Japan still retains a strong culture of regional newspapers, yet it too faces declining circulation, an ageing readership, and a delayed transition to digital platforms.

If the newspaper industry is in the process of disappearing, this book may become a record of one of its final landscapes. If newspapers are instead undergoing transformation, this book may serve as a speculative prototype for thinking about their future form.

かつては日常の情報を届けるメディアであった新聞は、いまや非日常なメディアになりつつある。

写真家・小原一真と文筆家・森旭彦が制作した写真集『THE NEWSPAPER』は、かつては日常のメディアであった新聞を、非日常的なアート表現のメディアとして用いることで、地域から新聞が失われることを批判的に表現している。

京都の地方紙である京都新聞に密着し、記者の取材から配達までを一冊におさめている。

それらは写真と、テキストで書かれた小冊子として写真集の中におさめられている。

大砲を打ち出すような作業でニュースを印刷してきた輪転機（印刷機）のリアル『ニュースの「大砲」』、

京都アニメーション放火殺人事件の遺族取材に携わった記者へのインタビュー『「悪」の輪郭を追って』、

コロナ禍の静寂の中で行われた祇園祭を静かに記述した『もうひとつの祇園祭』、そして新聞配達で結婚式の費用をためた新聞配達人のエピソード『NEWSPAPER LOVESTORY』——。

世界各地で地方紙は縮小し、あるいは消滅しつつあり、その結果として、研究者たちが「ニュース砂漠」と呼ぶ状況が生まれている。それは、信頼できる地域情報がもはや十分に流通しないコミュニティを意味する。日本にはいまなお強い地方紙文化が残っているが、同時に発行部数の減少、読者層の高齢化、デジタルプラットフォームへの移行の遅れにも直面している。

もし新聞産業が消えゆく途上にあるのだとすれば、この本は、その最後の風景のひとつを記録するものになるかもしれない。もし新聞が変容しつつあるのだとすれば、この本は、新聞の未来形を思索するための、ひとつの仮説的なプロトタイプになるだろう。
